ECAC East Preseason Coaches Poll Released

CENTERVILLE, Mass. - Defending NCAA Division III national champion Norwich University has been voted to the top spot for the second year in a row in the 2011-12 Eastern College Athletic Conference Women’s East Hockey League preseason coaches’ poll. The Cadets finished with 141 points and 10 first-place votes.

No. 1 ranked Norwich enters the season with a NCAA Division III championship title and a 25-4-1 record overall (17-0-1 league) from a year ago.  Led by Mark Bolding, the ECAC Women’s East Coach of the Year, Norwich is returning two First Team All – ECAC East players, both on defense.  Amanda Wilks (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Warner School), who scored two goals and 19 assists for 21 points, and Sarianne Lynn (Wethersfield, Conn./St. Lawrence University) with six goals and 23 assists for 29 points are back to bolster the defense. Norwich is also returning Second Team All-ECAC East forward Julie Fortier, who had 23 goals and 22 assists for 45 points. 

Clinching the number-two spot with 128 points and one first-place vote is Manhattanville College.  The Valiants are headed by Second Team All-ECAC forward Katie Little (Victoria, British Columbia/Team British Columbia), who led the team in scoring for the second year in a row with 12 goals and 22 assists for 34 points. Manhattanville is currently ranked eighth in the United States College Hockey Online (USCHO) preseason poll, and will look to defend its ECAC Division III Women’s East Ice Hockey title. 

Securing the number-three spot with 124 points and one first place vote is College of the Holy Cross.   Tied for third in the ECAC East standings last season with Saint Anselm College and New England College, Holy Cross had an overall record of 17-9-1 (13-5-0 league) and captured its third consecutive Women’s Open Tournament Championship with a 2-0 shootout victory over Saint Anselm.

Saint Anselm takes the fourth spot after skating to 20-6-1 record (13-5-0 league) in 2010-11. The Hawks return two-year leading scorer and First Team All-ECAC East forward Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach, Fla./North American Hockey Academy), who finished the season with 23 goals and 20 assists for 43 points. 

Completing the top five is New England College, which brings back the ECAC Women’s East Goalie of the Year in junior Teraysa White (Belgrade, Maine/Brewster Academy).  She helped lead the Pilgrims to a 12-8-6 record (11-3-4 league) last season. 

UMass Boston secures the sixth spot, followed by Salve Regina in seventh and Southern Maine, eighth. 

The coaches voted Saint Michael’s into the ninth spot and Castleton finished is tenth.  Nichols College and Plymouth State University are in the 11th and 12th positions, respectively. 

The ECAC Women’s East will start league play on November 4 as Norwich travels to Castleton, Manhattanville faces off at UMass Boston and New England College hosts Saint Michael’s all at 4:00 p.m starts .  Also, Holy Cross skates against Salve Regina at 6:00 p.m. and Saint Anselm hosts Nichols at 7:00 p.m.
