PITTSBURGH, PA (August 12, 2011)… The Chatham University Athletic Department is pleased to announce that Stanley Vieira will fill the position of Athletic Director for the university, starting in the 2011-12 school year. Vieira comes to Chatham from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA, a member of the NCAA Division III athletics, where he served as the athletic director and a part time faculty member since 1999.
In May of 1993 Vieira graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Boston with a degree in political science. He ran varsity track for his alma mater, competing in the 100-meter sprint, 200-meter sprint and the 4x100 meter relay. He later went on to receive his M.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies with a specialization in sports and society from Lesley University in 2003.
Under Vieira’s leadership, the athletics department at Lesley University grew significantly and currently offers 12 varsity sports. He oversaw the transition of Lesley to co-education and incorporated six men’s teams to the department. During his tenure, the student athletes have succeeded both on and off the field, clinching several conference championships and academic awards.
Prior to Lesley, Vieira acted as the assistant women’s soccer coach, the assistant women’s softball coach and the assistant athletic director at Bunker Hill Community College in Charlestown, MA. While at Bunker Hill, Vieira developed the publicity for the program, allowing the college to be featured as “The College of the Month” by Junior College Review in March 1999. In 1996, Vieira was the sports information director at the Community College of Rhode Island and CCRI’s assistant track and field coach. While in Rhode Island, Vieira was also served as the head coach for varsity boys and girls track and field teams at Mount Saint Charles Academy in Woonsocket. He mentored several athletes to All-State selection. Vieira also had a short stint with the Rhode Island Tigersharks as the assistant general manager of baseball operation. From 1994 – 1996, Vieira was the Marketing and Sales Associate for the Boston Red Sox.
“Stanley Vieira comes to us with the perfect background, experience and leadership. He has a proven track record of success and will be an immediate asset to Chatham University. I am thrilled that he will be joining us at the beginning of this academic year and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for Chatham Athletics with Stanley at the helm," notes Dr. Zauyah Waite, Chatham’s Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students.
