Plattsburgh, RIT Set for NCAA Semifinal Clash
INDIANAPOLIS--Plattsburgh State and Rochester Institute of Technology will represent the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's West this weekend as the 2012 NCAA Division III Women's Ice Hockey Championship concludes with the semifinals (Friday) and title game (Saturday). The latter Tigers will serve as the hosts at Ritter Arena in Rochester, N.Y.
It also happens that the conference foes will be squaring off against each other in Friday's first semifinal at 3:30 p.m. Plattsburgh is ranked No. 5 by D3hockey.com and sixth by USCHO.com while RIT is No. 1 according to both national polls. The RIT Tigers are 26-1-1, ECAC Women’s West champions and making their third NCAA appearance. RIT is riding an 12-game winning streak and can break last year’s program record for single-season victories with a win against the rival Cardinals. Last season, RIT advanced to the NCAA national title game before losing to Norwich.
The Cardinals, who won back-to-back national championships in 2007 and ’08, are back in the NCAA Tournament after missing the field in 2011. The Cardinals lost to the Tigers in the ECAC Women’s West championship contest, but earned their eighth NCAA tournament bid as an at-large selection. Plattsburgh is 7-3-1 in its last 11 starts and carries a 19-6-3 mark into Friday.
